CREATIVE BRIEF

Pride month is a time of celebration, commemoration, and acknowledgement that the fight for social justice and equality for the LBGTQ+ community is ongoing.

CommUNITY is a mini-exhibition in celebration of Pride Month open to artists identifying as LBGTQ+ and allies to display their artwork.

40 West Gallery is seeking artwork of all themes from self-identified LBGTQ+ artists, and artwork from allies that reflects solidarity with the LBGTQ+ community.

A little about the history of Pride Month: The origins of Pride Month began in June 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York, to enforce anti-transgender and gender non-conformity sentiments. These types of violent raids were common across the county, but this time the LGBTQ+ community rose up and fought back. Notably, Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera, both identified as trans females and women of color, were key in defending the Stonewall Inn and the folks inside from the police. Pride Month did not become official until 30 years later, but the very first Gay Pride Liberation March took place one year after Stonewall to commemorate the anniversary, and many attribute Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera as the mothers of the current queer social justice movement.

CommUNITY will be juried by D Garrett, a Denver visual artist and muralist who uses acrylic paint as well as a variety of other media to create art on canvas, walls, sculptures, and more. D is involved in the 40 West Arts Ambassador program and current 40 West Artist in Residence, and is focused on building an artist network with direct engagement in the 40 West Arts community. D’s passion for community building, local art, LGBTQIA, and alternative spiritual communities mesh her love for art and unity in creative, inspirational ways.

Artists of all levels of experience are invited to apply. All mediums considered.
