CREATIVE BRIEF

40 West Gallery invites you to create art that speaks to Colorado’s unique legends, mysteries, tall tales and icons.

From the Convention Center’s blue bear, DIA’s “Blucifer”, Colfax’s Casa Bonita, Estes Parks’s Stanley Hotel, Rye’s Bishop’s Castle, the sleeping Ute of Cortez and the Rocky Mountains themselves there are no shortage of Colorado icons to inspire and draw from.

Bigfoot, UFOs, Jackapheasants, vampires, tommnknockers and web footed horses have all been spotted here and been the base for many a tall tale and campfire story.

Coloradan’s continue to indulge in the folk legends even today including the almost too bizarre to believe ritual of Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland, Emma Crawford Coffin Races and the perennial Denver airport conspiracy theories.

40 West Gallery’s Colorado Folk Tales and Icon’s show will showcase works of art that represent these facets of Colorado’s history and culture. Artists of all levels of experience are invited to apply, all mediums considered.

SCREENING PROCESS

Submissions will be screened by a panel, including 40 West Arts curators and invited guest jurors, to ensure quality and applicability of work. Please note that depending on the number of submissions, our curation process, and other factors, not all submitted works are guaranteed entrance into our show. We will notify you within the timeframe indicated herein regarding the acceptance of your work(s).

Also note that while we strive to include works from as many artists as possible, please know that we do not tolerate submissions that promote hate, racism or violence against others. We reserve the right to refuse any submission that does not adhere to or promote our mission.
